Sarah Butler: Official Transcript 6/15 – 6/30

“London”, writing hut of George Bernard Shaw, Hertfordshire UK, ca. 1910

Opening Reception:  June 15, 8-10pm

REVERSE is pleased to present the first solo exhibition of works by Sarah Butler in New York.

Featuring work from the past five years of Butler’s career, Official Transcript is an installation, exhibition and ongoing project that critically reconsiders the rhetoric of the digital mobile era.  By approaching handwriting as a performative medium, Butler emphasizes the act of writing as a collaborative social behavior and an exercise in the act of realization.  Drawing from object theory as manifested in design scholarship as well as Hanne Darboven’s concept of “writing time,” Official Transcript explores the affective agency of text filtered through the artist’s experience of the first decade of the 21st century. Official Transcript will include a full installation of cloud test (2011-2012), a set of 365 texts written in such a way that they are only legible after active reflection and a collaborative event on June 22 called Writing Program, a site-specific experiment in co-writing featuring artists from the art writing blog word servents.

Sarah Butler is a Brooklyn based artist whose work has been shown in group exhibitions at The Do Right Hall, in Marfa, Texas; Regina Rex Art Gallery in Queens, and Interstate Projects in Brooklyn. Her forthcoming projects include Art Writing (2013), an artist’s book for launch by Blonde Art Books at Schema Projects in Brooklyn, New York, available also at Art Metropole, Toronto, Ontario.
