DANIEL JOHNSTON: here 11/7 – 11/24

Daniel Johnston

OPENING THURSDAY 11/7, 7 – 9PM

REVERSE is pleased to present “DANIEL JOHNSTON: here” from November 7th -24th, 2013 as part of a traveling exhibition of images taken of the iconic musician and artist Daniel Johnston by photographer Jung Kim. On view will be 16 color and black and white photographs that have been exhibited in Austin, London and New York City. The show at REVERSE will also include a collection of original drawings by Daniel Johnston.

“DANIEL JOHNSTON: here” is an in-depth photographic study of legendary singer-songwriter and visual artist Daniel Johnston by New York City-based documentary and portrait photographer Jung Kim. The culmination of an intimate five-year collaboration and friendship, “DANIEL JOHNSTON: here” captures rare and beautifully moving moments of one of the most compelling artists today. The photographs not only chronicle Johnston’s life on the road during his worldwide tours, but also his prolific life at home in Waller, Texas. A traveling exhibition was launched in conjunction with the first-ever photography book on Johnston. The book was underwritten entirely by Johnston’s fans through the crowd-funding website Kickstarter, and the photographs were selected from thousands of photographs captured on film from 2008 to present.

DANIEL JOHNSTON has spent the last 20 years exposing his heartrending tales of unrequited love, cosmic mishaps and existential torment to an ever-growing international cult audience. Initiates, including a healthy number of discerning musicians and critics, have hailed him as an American original in the style of bluesman Robert Johnson and country legend Hank Williams. His songs have been covered by a number of well-known artists including Beck, Tom Waits, Eddie Vedder, TV on the Radio, The Flaming Lips, Yo La Tengo, Wilco, Death Cab for Cutie, M. Ward, Guster, Sparklehorse, Bright Eyes, Jeff Mangum, Spiritualized and many more. Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain famously wore a T-shirt bearing the cover art of Johnston’s Hi, How Are You album to the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards, and frequently wore it on camera during interviews. Johnston’s artwork has been featured in the Whitney Museum among others.

JUNG KIM is a documentary and portrait photographer based in New York City. She attended Parsons School of Design where she began photographing the local musicians and artists.
